Background

We are fortunate in Scoil Eoin to have large grounds that were planted with deciduous

trees many years ago. These trees enhance both our school and the local enviroment as

well as providing a habitat for for many species of wildlife.

Hidden away at the back was a piece of waste ground that was a dumping ground for builder’s

rubble when the school was under construction and has lain neglected in the intervening years.

Our plan was to transform this derelict area into a garden. An area of approximately 21m ² will

be developed into a vegetable and herb garden with an area set aside for compost bins at the end.

The project has several objectives :

  • To provides an authentic learning environment for students.
  • To create a natural environmentand and develop a connection with nature
  • To stimulate and develop pride in their school and local environment as well as an  appreciation of the natural environment.
  • Turn a piece of waste ground into an attractive looking wildlife habitat.
  • As well as looking attractive it will encourage a wide range of insects an esssential source  of food for other wildlife into the garden.
  • Provide hands-on activities to consolidate the learning that has taken place in the SESE (Social, Environmental and Scientific Education) curriculum areas
  • Ensure that when they become adults that they will consider the needs of wildlife.
  • Have a reasonable knowledge of local flora and fauna
  • Help to develop an outdoor classroom
  • Teach children to recognize insects and bees in the garden and understand their significance to the environment
  • Provide an area for recycling organic waste.
  • Observe identify, investigate and record plants and animals in the local environment.
